This 220-page field guide is the second in our Field Notes series: a loud, loving, unfiltered portrait of the west side of Athens, and of Peristeri specifically.
Peristeri is flashy, trashy, beautiful, intense, raw, funny, generous, and full of serious character. One of the biggest municipalities in Greece, and one of the proudest, it has its own codes, rituals, legends, aesthetics and everyday theatre. This Field Notes is not really a tourist guide, but more a field diary from the hood: a moodboard of colours and textures, streets and cars, kiosks and balconies, football chants, coffee rituals, DIY postmodernism, concrete jungle nature, and people living life with humour, struggle, style and heart.
Through photography, fragments, observations and affection, A West Side Story looks at the ordinary things that make a place unforgettable: the loud sound system, the freddo espresso, the terrace barbecue, the schoolyard game, the orange tree, the Atromitos match day, the neighbourhood legend, the everyday smile.
It is a celebration of a place that sometimes it can be too much, but is never nothing.
If you’re from Peristeri, you already know.
If you’re not: buckle up.
With respect, love and thanks to all the people of Peristeri.
